OAKLAND RAIDERS USAMA YOUNG TO SERVE AS PRINCIPAL FOR A DAY AT HOMETOWN SCHOOLS
Washington, DC and Upper Marlboro, MD – Usama Young of the Oakland Raiders returns to his hometown this week to serve as ‘Principal for a Day’ at two schools he attended as a child.
“Education and academic achievement has always been a focal point in my life, which my parents instilled in me at a very early age; so it is befitting for me to return to those schools that helped develop my early love of learning and share that passion with current students,” states Usama Young.
Usama started off his academic career at John Burroughs Education Campus and transferred to Phyllis E. Williams, when his family moved to Largo, Maryland. On Thursday, April 10th, Usama will serve as Principal for a Day at John Burroughs located in Washington, DC and on Friday, April 11th will serve as Principal at Phyllis E. Williams located in Upper Marlboro, MD.
Usama partnered with Athletes for Charity on its Youth Literacy Initiative to assist with the coordination of his visits to the schools and also donate brand new reading books to each student, in an effort to promote the importance developing early literacy skills. Usama will personally donate and deliver over 1000 books to the elementary schools. Titles to be delivered to the students include Disney’s Wonderful World of Earth, Wonderful World of Dinosaurs, Wonderful World of Nature and Wonderful World of Space; Penguin Group’s Who Was and Who Is book series featuring notables such as Jackie Robinson, Nelson Mandela, Steve Jobs, Bill Gates, Neil Armstrong, Dr. Seuss, Michelle and Barack Obama, and more.
“We are extremely excited to have Usama visit us!” states Karen DeSouza-Gallman, Principal of Phyllis E. Williams Elementary School. “It is not often that we have our former students come back to their elementary school. It’s great that he will also bring with him a positive message about the importance of education to our students and even better, spread the joy of reading.”
